Sunday 10/9 : "The moron in the Red Sox jersey" WINS!
(For those that played early yesterday, you can understand how I couldn't resist that headline.)
Had a good sized turnout for a beautiful day this past Sunday at Balboa. We found the golf course with greens that were a tad shaggy, some real rough in some places, and basically entirely too much water for being in the middle of a historic drought (must be nice not to have a water bill).
In the 1st flight, Bob Grassa (aka: the M-i-t-RS-j, see headline) channeled his inner Gary Matthews, which resulted in a 2 birdie 2 bogey round of 72, that nipped Paul Rathbun by a shot. John "Bumpy" Tinsley had a very good day, shooting 1 under 35 on the back, for a net 72, beating the "real" Gary Matthews by a shot.
In the 2nd flight, which had an awful lot of players, we saw the return of our old friend "The Gypsy". Larry Chvatal, who has been on I.R. for the better part of this whole year with shoulder surgery, picked up right where he left off in his second event back. Though he did tire out the last few holes, he still posted an excellent 76 to clip Tim Nou by a shot for low gross. Even the win (and a couple of beers) couldn't get him to forget his bogey at the last, when a par would have beaten our Club Champ Tom Woliver by 1. On the net side in flight 2, we had a log jam at 68, with 4 guys tied. Coming out on top in the card-off was Mike McHugh. With Nou taking 2nd gross, this left Brian Lynch in 2nd net, with John Sewell taking 3rd net.
The 3rd flight was pretty quiet most of the day, with a couple of 90's leading the gross, and a couple of 72's leading the net. Then, the story of the day unfolded. Seems Lonnie Lucas didn't show for his tee time in the last group. Then, Charles Walker showed up, unaware that we had an event. As he was just going to "play anyway", he took Lonnie's spot. 5 hours later, we now know why he wanted to play. After I checked his handicap, which put him in the top of the 3rd flight, his 79/66 was the class of the field. Now we know why he wanted to play so much. Rod Billingsley won a card-off for second gross, which would have been a winner had original playing partner Lonnie showed up. Rod left with a big smile as always, probably because he was headed to Lonnie's house to try and get the $20 that his no show cost him. Jim Tiensvold won a card-off over Ray Prazen for 1st net with the two 3rd places going to Jeff Middlebrook and new member Vic Poeuv.
SHOTS OF THE DAY
Besides the four Closest to the Pin winners, there were some pretty spectacular pars being made. On the dreaded 4th hole, Club Champ Tom Woliver hooked his 3 metal into the bushes off the tee. Taking a drop quite a ways back, he proceeded to him the same hooked 3 metal to about a foot and a half, for a tap in par. After hitting a pine tree off the tee on 5 with that same 3 metal, Tom's second missed the green right, kicked further right, onto the path, down the path, and almost back into the fairway, about 65 yards short of the green. He then hit that one to about 2 feet for another "routine" par. Not to be outdone, Paul Rathbun hit his tee ball out on #7 (oops!), then teed up another ball and made eagle with that one , for a very unlikely par. Rumor has it he hit it in the canyon 2 more times on the back, but still managed to par those holes as well!
Our next event will be the long-time favorite Balboa Park 2-man Eclectic Championship, October 29th & 30th, so find a partner for this fun two day tournament. Entries will open soon (not now).
