PACE OF PLAY

By berkabee · November 4, 2015 · 1 min read

“Like sand through the hour glass... Tick-tock, tick-tock... tick-tock, tick-tock...”
Balboa Golf Course and it's representative, The Balboa Golf Men's Club (that's us, guys), expect a round of golf to be played in 4:15. Under some conditions, 4:30 is acceptable so long as a group is not more than 15 minutes behind the group in front of them. If they ARE over 4:30 total time AND more than 15 minutes behind the group in front of them, a one-stroke penalty W result PLUS for each 10 minutes (beyond the 15) a further penalty of one stroke WILL result for EVERY player in the group. To clarify: if your round takes 4:35 and you come in 25 minutes after the group in front of you EACH player WILL be given a 2 stroke penalty: 1 for the initial >15 minute gap and an additional one for the next 10 minute gap. The rules of golf require reasonable pace of play and there are numerous steps each member of a team can take to keep up with the group in front. * The easiest of all may be, upon holing your own putt, while the rest of your mates finish putting out, go to the next tee and tee off. *Another, play ready golf. *Another, if you've had a series of high scores on prior holes and you're not likely to win anything in your flight, upon reaching the max score you can post, pick up, give yourself the max, note DQ and move on. If you care to appeal to the Board, feel free to respond here. Your Board of Directors

First off, the first groups set pace, if they set pace at 4:30 then it is impossible for those following to improve on that. Second, I have waited on 17 tee for 20 minutes, then played out in 15 only to look up 18 and see it empty . . . another 15 to play 18 and we look way behind. Third, this sets up some of us quicker players to assume the a-hole role in regards to some of the more, let's say 'deliberate' players who may cost us strokes. Fourth, I once went 45-35 to place in the money . . . as soon as I gave in I got out of my own way and played "golf". If I had "DQed" myself... Fifth, I have also wrestled with playing partners on 16 over spot of drop, OB or hazard, "Your 5 minutes is up!" etc. until 17 AND 18 were clear . . . in that case is it kosher to move on alone or with any like-minded players in the group leaving the aforementioned unfortunate golfer to deal with his own personal milieu? . . . there's more where that came from!

I'm not planning on getting in a debate with you but *the first groups play in under 3 1/2 hours, so your first point is irrelevant. *the 8th group yesterday played in just under 4 hours. *the 11th group was :23 behind the 10th group but finished in less than 4:30 so wouldn't be subject to penalty *the 13th group was :16 behind the group in front of them and played in 4:34 so would, in future, be subject to penalty *the 14th group played in 4:34 as well and finished 8 minutes behind the 13th group: NO EXPOSURE TO PENALTY *the last group was VERY late both in terms of time of play and gap between them and the group before them. THAT is the problem we are attempting to resolve. We understand that CART PATHS ONLY had quite a bit to do with it but there are steps that can and must be taken to keep pace of play reasonable.... ...and your second point is that you've played the 17th, a par 3 in 15 minutes and the group in front of you played the par 4 18th in less time??? whoa....

. . . and, I appreciate the enthusiasm, but really good luck with all that . . . and the equitable application thereof.

Apparently, you are asking me to shoot my bad day 90 strokes in the same amount of time that the earlier players are taking their 75 strokes, and I lose three balls a round on average. If you just want great golfers in the club, then I can find another club. Just say no go Golf Nazi's. :P
