Woliver repeats in this years Club Championship!
Tom Woliver took a different approach in this years edition of the Club Championship. Last year, Tom started in 10th after round #1. This year he went wire for wire to win by three shots. Day #1 of the championship, saw Woliver set the pace at 71 with Alex Gonzales stalking him at 72. Day two provided a little daylight for Woliver as the field in general posted slightly higher scores. Woliver still led with a (71-73) 144 while 2013 champ Joe Tinsley got a stroke back at (74-72) 146. He was in a tie with Gary Matthews who had put up a consistent 73-73. Paul Rathbun made the final group only three back at 147. Final day and Woliver started with a hiccup by posting a bogie on the 1st hole and his led was down to one thin stroke. I like to think the pressure was getting to him but it was probably just a bad breakfast burrito. The ship was righted and Woliver again moved out to a 2 stroke advantage after the 15th hole. Finishing in style, Gary Matthews rammed home a birdie on 18 but Woliver's approach came to rest 2' from the cup as he finished the win in style. Tom gets title #2 and promptly tried to drown former lifeguard, Al Bruton, with the traditional champagne shower after the win. Who needs saving now Al? Gary Matthews put in a solid three days to take the runner-up spot.
The other prize up for grabs was the low net win which gives that player entry to the Tournament of Club Champions NET tournament. So who shows up? None other than 2014 President Cups Champ, Zack Manual. This cats been on a hot streak lately and it continued all three days of the championship. That's not to say it was easy. Scott Billion had posted a 73=64 on day two and carried a 4 shot lead into the final 18. Manual stepped up to the challenge throwing down a 78=69 on the last day for a net total of 211. Billion came up one short at 212 along with Gary Matthews also at 212. Manuel takes 1st net in his flight and the additional tournament entry which will be played in December.
Random thoughts:
**Gary Matthews had a great tournament finishing at 2 over par for the three days and finishing 2nd overall in both the gross & the net.
**Steve Swanson was out buying electric company stock on Monday after his wayward drive on #6 bounced out of bounds only to hit a SDG&E power pole putting the ball back in play.
**The clubs beer drinking status took a hit when on Monday while unloading the sodas from the cooler (they were untouched) a lone Coors Light was found hiding on the bottom. Look closer next time guys!
