“I would give the rundown of the flights but when everyone left at 4:00, I stayed behind to finish the beer in the cooler. Made it home safely, AC/DC on the radio, and a big thanks to the rest of the guys for leaving before the drinking stock was depleted.”
He started slow, gave everyone hope, and then snatched it away and emerged the winner of the 80th Balboa Men's Club Championship -- and his name is TOM WOLIVER! After a 78 and standing in 8th after round #1, Tom surged to the front with the lowest round of the event with a 69 on day #2 to hold a one shot lead with 18 holes left on the schedule. Andrew Fitzgerald and Joe Tinsley (the 2013 champ) were lurking but how do you rundown a guy with this much game. You don't!! Tinsley matched him with a final round 73 but Woliver took a 3 shot victory over Fitzgerald and Tinsley finished 5 shots back. A great effort by the entire flight chasing Tom to the finish line but it was his championship which he secured in fine style!. With the win Tom gets the money, the glory, and the most coveted thing of all, a photo in the Champions Gallery!! Great job Tom, you deserve your place in history!! The other big news was the RETURN of our past Champions!! The city had stretched the course to the tips and the 1972 winner, Gene Bianchi shots 78. I almost think if he would have played all 3 rounds he could have been a contender. Who said these guys are over the hill? Play with them on a regular basis and they will own your house! This years special reunion had 7 champions from days gone bye playing in custom shirts and finishing right ahead of the final twelve. Besides Geno's great score, Tom Strong powered his way to an 80 on a course set really tough. I would give the rundown of the flights but when eveyone left a 4:00, I stayed behind to finish the beer in the cooler. Made it home safety, AC/DC on the radio, and a big thanks to the rest of the guys for leaving before the drinking stock was depleted. The wife said no, because I smelled of beer and cigarettes (don't worry Hedge, I'm buying the book) but Charlie Chance has to be proud because I worked the word snatch into the article. Hey, let's just go to the results before I pass out!! One more thing: The club and the tournaments are a ton of fun but let's look out for each other while we can! Steve Klein's sister is in a very serious battle with breast cancer and the outlook is not good. So as we put our clubs away today, let's all say a prayer for Steve's sis and the entire family. There family is our family!!
