“How about that "BRUT"? He somehow always manages to be the center of attention! Now he's really gone & done it! No more suspicious injuries & ailments! No more rolling down the muddy hills! No more shattering shaking attacks! THIS, boys, is the real deal! For a while it looked as if they might have to call the coroner.”
Santa's only 4 days out but lets put that on the back burner cause the Hanson Memorial rolled into Balboa Park this Sunday. Last major event of the year and a good crowd was on hand looking for a victory.
First, lets remember the member who's name graces this event. Dick Hanson was the president of our beloved men's club for 5 years and then served as treasure right up until his passing. He also was captain for the Saturday Match Play Team throughout the 90's in the absolute glory years winning 3 championships under his leadership. Dick also played on those winning teams. Hanson always described himself as a "net player". Consistent yes, better than average of course, but not someone who could take the "go low" boys to task on a given day. For all the time, work, and love Dick bestowed on the club the tournament was established to recognize a net winner in this annual event. The plaque states the event is played in honor of "Our favorite Dick" if you ever had the pleasure to meet the man you would understand.
So who won? Well here came Godfather Capers with his usual swagger looking good with a 77 and a 68 net. Remember Howard Cossell's call of the Ali / Fraiser fight? "Down goes Fraiser, down goes Fraiser." This time it was down goes Capers as the dark shadow of the Gypsy Chvatal, fresh off a Christmas hug from Roy Long, reach out with a dagger to the heart as his bodyguards looked on in disbelief. That's right, not even hitman Barron could save him as Chvatal carded a 76 for a 66 net and the Hanson title. Ray Prazen was third overall only three shots back with a net 69.
In the flights, Joe Tinsley, stuffed his stocking with the low gross score of the day (75) to win the top flight gross title. Jeff Middlebrook collected his Christmas gift in flight #3 with a 84. No lump of coal for Steve Swanson who took the net in flight #2 with a 79=70. And Ray Prazen grabbed a present from under the tree with the net title in Flight #3 with a 93=69.
Finally, among the missing was our recently disposed club presdent Al Bruton who took a header while hanging Christmas lights at his house. Jeff, you didn't need to kick the ladder out from under him, you already won the election!! Al suffered only what can be described as a complete body injury. I'm talking every possible limb, knee, back, and all exposed areas of skin. Get well and back on the course soon Al!!
Now the results of the final event for 2015:

The "GYPSY" gets to add another "V" to his name, as if he needed another one!! From now on those good luck hugs from "Roly Poly Roy are going to come with a price;; at least a thorough explanation of his baffling tournament formats!! How about that "BRUT"?? He somehow always manages to be the center of attention!! Now he's really gone & done it!! No more suspicious injuries & ailments!! No more rolling down the muddy hills!! No more shattering shaking attacks!! THIS,, boys, is the real deal!! For a while it looked as if they might have to call the coroner,, but,, "uncle Al" ain't known as the "THE BRUT" for nothing!! He's wrapped up like a mummy, but he's still staggering around,, and knowing Al, I would expect him back on our "historic links" in record time!! A good time was had by all,, except for "Roly Poly Roy",, but that's another story, way too sad to be told during the Christmas season. But anyway,, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!! See you on the 6th.
