2014 featured many great highs for our historic club and unfortunately a few lows. With the new year only hours away it's time to review, David Letterman style, the happenings of 2014.
**Top Ten Highs**
10....COCHRAN'S BACK IN THE CLUB ---- Andy Cochran, a former club champ, jumped back into action, challenging to best in the club in a calmer more relaxed style.
9.....BOB SHANDS SCOOPS THE MONEY ---- Tricky veteran, Bob Shands, planned it well, sticking shot after shot on the money, winning 4 closest to the pin contests and proved that a old dog can still hunt!!
8.....SATURDAY & SENIOR MATCHPLAY ---- The Saturday group started strong at 2-0 but stumbled midway through the 6 week season. But the "cardiac kids" sweep the last two to nab a playoff spot for the 3rd season in a row. The Seniors took a different path, starting slow and then finishing strong to punch a playoff ticket for the 5th consecutive year!
7.....270 MEMBERS ---- The club ranks swelled to a six year high as more willing bodies ponied up the cash and joined the fun.
6.....RECORD PAYOUT AGAIN!! ----- Last year was epic, this year was just ridiculous with a total of $40,737 served up to a club full of hungry golfers. A new record 162 players scored payouts!
5.....MILLS ACES #6 ---- Are you kidding me. Most guys can't even hit that green and here comes Rob Mills. One ball, One swing, and finally One Stroke. He not only gets the fame but scores the hole-in-one pot as well which means his "trophy wife" made $410.
4.....ZACH MANUEL TAKES PRES. CUP ----- Newcomer Manuel shows no respect for us grizzly veterans as he pounds the field over two days to take President Brutons cup.
3.....WOLIVER SPRAYS THE CHAMPAGNE ---- It's a never ending quest to plant your mug on the club house wall and little Tom Woliver pulled it off in style. Standing 8th after round #1, 9th after 19 holes, Tom forged to the top with a second round 69 and was never caught on his journey to immorality!
2.....VARNER TAKES 2ND MATCH PLAY TITLE ---- The revised club match play championship entered its 3rd year and guess what? A familiar name keeps moving toward the top. To win this event is a once in a lifetime experience. Throw that thought out the window as 2012 champ John Varner takes the 2014 crown.
1.....80th REUNION FLIGHT ---- The clubs 80th consecutive club championship got real special with the return of the past champions. 12 winners from previous years joined the field in a special flight for the last day of the event. Grey hair, barefoot players, guys on crutches, now we're talking Balboa at its finest and what a wonderful sight is was!!!
TOP 10 LOWS:
10.....CHANCE MISSES TEETIME ---- For the first time in his career Sunday came around and someone was missing. It seems that Charlie was on a Saturday night hunt that didn't end until Sunday afternoon since he filled his bagged limit. Judging by the smile on his face Monday afternoon, it was worth the club fine.
9.....6-6-6 BREAKS BARRON'S CALCULATOR ---- Peter Berk came up with another new tournament, the groundbreaking 6-6-6. This thing had playoffs for everything including a payout for who got the tee in the ground the straightest. So who had to help figured out this mess? The innocent one, Larry Barron stood tall punching the data into his overworked and smoking 99 cent store calculator.
8.....SENIOR TEAM LOSES IN PLAYOFFS ---- It looked like the year, a repeat of the 2010 championship year. But alas, Morgan Run spoiled the party in the semi finals on the way to their first championship season. Thanks alot you country club hacks!
7.....IS IT A GRASSA OR A WOLIVER ---- Tom's putter got a little week while Bob's was slightly too strong, so if you leave a birdie putter a half a turn shot it's a Woliver. If it curls just behind the hole, it's a Grassa. Hey, who makes up the crap!! Sorry, I guess it was me.
6.....SATURDAY MATCH PLAY OUT OF PLAYOFFS ---- The "cardiac kids" suffered a major coronary and blew out of the playoffs, losing to the bridge people (Coronado) in the first round.
5.....BRUTON STEPS DOWN ---- After 5 glorious years, Big Al hangs up his gavel as leader of our merry band. He graciously handed the road map to the promised land to Jeff to insure a secure future.
4....SATURDAY MATCH PLAY LOSES AT HOME ---- For somewhere around 20 years no one could touch this unstoppable force on it's own piece of real estate. Well a heavenly gang of renegades from St Mark's golf course change that. A few things are still hard to wrap a fellows head around. The towers coming down, Earnhart's end at Daytona, and Balboa losing at home. The team still made the playoffs, but don't let this happen again for another 20 years!!!
3....PARKER MISSES FINAL ROUND ---- 4 time champ Parker was only one back and looking to ambush Woliver and get one for the thumb but fate intervened in the form of work comes first. His company swished him off to the Great Northwest for meetings and then with a possible plan to get him back for his tee time, they jammed him in a plane headed for Denver. What's next on the schedule, Siberia?
2....BRUTON'S HIGH DIVE ---- Just retired former Pres Al Bruton showed off his athletic prowess with a half gainer from his ladder while hanging holiday lights. A busted up wing, torn up ear, and multiple contusions were the result when he failed to spot the landing. He still would have won the event with 10's across the board and then the East German judge gave him a 2. Sorry Al.
1.....ED MCGEE PASSES ---- Our good friend and loyal member Ed McGee got called to the great layout in the sky. Ed hadn't played much over the last 5 years but he was Balboa through and through. Ed only had one problem and that was the count. He took to the game later in life and was trying his hardest to perfect a non-perfect game with utter intensity. He tried so hard that keeping count wasn't a proprietary so each hole usually became a 6. That is until he finished the re-count then all the numbers you could possibly score would come into play. When playing that heavenly course Ed, just use Larry Barron's calculator if you can get it to work. Next time on the first tee, look upward and tip you hat in Ed's honor!!
Now 2015 is here and my only request is that you guys give me some better material for next years list!!
Happy New Year everyone
