Just 3 months left for 2013 and it has been an eventful year. We have a new club champion in Joe Tinsley and new senior club champion in John Hoffman, with John winning both ours and Torrey Pines senior championships. So you might think the year is done, except for the silly season events. Not so. As our keeper of playing records Larry Chvatal has reported in this site, there are still a lot of duckets out there to be made for both Wednesday and Sunday tournaments. As the Dash for Cash heats up placements on the money list change with each event. No one is out of the running so keep playing for your shot of the pot of gold. I attended a meeting of the Friends of Balboa Park for the formal presentation of the Golf Division's design for our new club house. $11.5 million set aside for the project from the Golf Enterprise Fund. Local residents have no complaints with the club design, but want a sidewalk from 28th street to the Golden Hills Recreation Center for joggers, walkers, etc. I agree with the need, but the money from the GEF can only be used on the golf course foot print. So, now the project is delayed until a solution can be reached. As it is the project would not start until 2015 and be completed in 2017. It will mean a couple of years of confusion around the course. More as I learn more. Of major concern to me at this point in time is getting more of you involved with the club and getting younger members to join the Board of Directors. We must think about our future leadership to keep the club advancing and progressive. Give it some thought. Nominations for Officers and the Board are at the November meeting and anyone can be nominated from the floor. Come one and come all and step up to the plate. There are many areas that can use your help. As for course conditions, at the moment they suck, as the fairways and greens have just been punched and it may be necessary to use your driver on the greens, but that will change in time and the current thought process is to let Kikuya take over, as it requires less water and is drought resistant. So, buy some velcro and practice on it. In the meantime - Grip it and Rip it.
